The Malta Botanic Gardens links a network of 6 historic gardens spanning over 12 hectares embedded within a chain of military fortifications in Floriana, Malta.

Gardens History

The Floriana Lines were designed by the military engineer Pietro Paolo Floriani, between 1622 and 1636. The Malta Botanical Gardens site encompasses the northern segment of the Floriana Line of fortifications defending Valletta, starting from Porte des Bombes, St. Philip Bastion, St.James Bastion and Notre Dame Curtain, Notre Dame Faussebray, Sa Maison Bastion, and also, along the top of the glacis, now referred to as the Pinetum, the Lunette, the Coverway, and the Pieta’ Lunette.

Argotti Garden was recognised as a botanical garden in 1890 and is considered the third oldest botanical garden in the Commonwealth. The site also includes the Malta Railway tunnel that operated between 1883 and 1931 and a 1950’s modernist building at il-Mall Garden designed by Architect Renato Laferla.
