The Mall

The Mall or Maglio Garden was built by Grandmaster Lascaris in 1656 as a recreational space for the Knights of the Hospitaller and Military Order of St. John. It was designated as a botanic garden by Sir Alexander Ball in 1805, and later became a public garden. Today this garden features numerous monuments and fountains and is characterised by mature trees belonging to different interesting species, such as the Tipuana tipu, which originates from South America or the Kigelia africana, which originates from tropical Africa. This garden is currently being planted with numerous flowering plants that are highly attractive to pollinating insects, such as bees, butterflies, moths and hoverflies. The garden shall thus be converted to a pollinator garden. Visitors shall learn about the importance of pollinators in our daily lives, risks and threats that are endangering these important insects groups and also learn to appreciate and admire the diversity of flowering plants and the beauty of their flowers.
